The use of information technologies, information strategies, and social media in political and governmental processes is changing the information environment. It is engaging citizens, supporting the democratic decision-making processes, and strengthening "representative democracy." Twenty-first century statecraft aims for a broader and more active citizen participation enabled by the internet, mobile communications, and other technologies in today's representative democracy, as well as through more participatory or direct forms of citizen involvement in addressing public challenges.

Mona Eltahawy is an award-winning columnist and an international public speaker on Arab and Muslim issues. She is a columnist for Canada's Toronto Star, Israel's The Jerusalem Report and Denmark's Politiken. Her opinion pieces have been published frequently in The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune and she has appeared as a guest analyst in several media outlets.
